Predict the products expected to be obtained at the electrodes when ICl and `ICI_(3)` are separately electrolysed.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`2ICI hArr I^(+) + ICI_(2)^(-) hArr ICI_(2)^(+) + ICI_(4)^(-)`
When fused ICI is subjected to electrolysis, `I_(2)` is liberated at the cathode while both `I_(2)` and `Cl_(2)` are liberated at the anode. In contrast , when `ICI_(3)` is subjected to electrolysis, `I_(2)` and `Cl_(2)` both are liberated at both the the electrode.
