What happens when a mixture of `(NH_(4))_(2)SO_(4)` and `NaNO_(3)` is heated ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

When a mixture of `(NH_(4))_(2)SO_(4)` and `NaNO_(3)` is heated below `200^(@)C` , ammonium nitrate and sodium sulphuate are obatined . In the next stage, ammonium nitrate dissociates to yield nitrous oxide `(N_(2)O)` and water.
`(NH_(4))_(2)SO_(4) + 2NaNO_(3) to Na_(2)SO_(4) + 2NH_(4) NO_(3)`
`NH_(4)NO_(3) overset(Delta)toN_(2)O + 2H_(2)O`
