Write with balanced equation what happens when potassium iodide solution is added to an aqueous solution of copper sulphate.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

When KI is added to `CuSO_(4)` solution, it undergoes oxidation and liberates `I_(2).I_(2)` combines with KI to form brown coloured `KI_(3)` which makes the solution brownish. On the other hand, `CuSO_(4)` is reduced to form white precipitate of cuprous iodide.
`underset("(blue solution)")(2overset(+2)(Cu)SO_(4))+4overset(-1)(KI)tounderset("(white)")(2overset(+1)(Cu)Idarr)+overset(0)(I_(2))+2K_(2)SO_(4)`
`KI+I_(2)hArrKI_(3)` (brown)
