Are all the five bonds in `PCl_(5)` molecule equivalent? Justify your answer.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

All the five bonds in phosphorus pentachloride `(PCl_(5))` are not equivalent. `PCl_(5)` has a trigonal bipyramidal structure, having three equatorial and two axial bonds. The equatorial bonds are equivalent while the axial bonds are different and longer than the equatorial bonds.
