What happens when H(3)PO(3) is heated?...

What happens when `H_(3)PO_(3)` is heated?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The oxidation state of P in `H3P0 3 is +3 , which is the intermediate state between the highest ( +5) and the lowest (-3) oxidation states of P. Therefore, on heating, `H_(3)PO_(3)` undergoes disproportionation to form `PH_(3)` and `H_(3)PO_(4)` with oxidation states of - 3 and +5 , respectively.
