Elements of group-16 generally show lower value of first ionisation enthalpy compared to the corresponding periods of group-15. Why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Group-15 elements are comparatively much more stable than the group-16 elements, due to the half-filled p-orbitals electronic configurations. Consequently, larger amount of energy is required to remove electrons leading to the higher value of first ionisation enthalpy.
