Give the reason for bleaching action of `Cl_(2)`.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`Cl_(2)` liberates nascent oxygen in aqueous solution or in presence of moisture.
`Cl_(2)+H_(2)Oto2HCl+[O]` (Nascent oxygen)
The nascent oxygen brings about the oxidation of coloured substances present in vegetable and organic matter,to colourless substances.
Coloured substance + [O] `to` colourless substance.
Thus bleaching action of `Cl_(2)` is due to oxidation, which is permanent. Hence, it is extensively used in paper and textile industry to bleach cotton, rayon and wood pulp.
