Write the reactions of `F_(2)` and `Cl_(2)` with water.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`F_(2)` is a strong oxidant. It oxidises `H_(2)O` to `O_(2)` or `O_(3)`
`2F_(2)(g)+2H_(2)O(l)to4H^(+)(aq)+4F^(-)(aq)+O_(2)(g)`
`3F_(2)(g)+3H_(2)O(l)to6H^(+)(aq)+6F^(-)+O_(3)(g)`
On the other hand, `Cl_(2)` reacts with `H_(2)O` to form hydrochloric acid and hypochlorous acid.
`Cl_(2)(g)+H_(2)O(l)tounderset("Hydrochloric acid")(HCl(aq))+underset("Hypochlorous acid")(HOCl(aq))`
