With what neutral molecule is `CIO^(-)` isoelectronic? Is that molecule a Lewis base ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Number of electrons in `CIO^(-) = 17 + 8 + 1 = 26`
A neutral isoelectronic molecule with 26 electrons is `OF_(2)(8 + 2 xx 9= 26)` . Also, if we replace `O^(-)` (9 electrons) in `ClO^(-)` by F (9 electrons), the resulting neutral molecule is CIF. since Cl in CIF can further donate electrons to two more F atoms to form `CIF_(3)`, CIF acts as a Lewis base.
