Give the formula and describe the strncture of a noble gas species which is isostructural with: `ICI_(4)^(-)`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Structure of `ICI_(4)^(-)` : No. of electrons in the valence shell of I = 7 . No. of electrons contributed by each of the four Cl- atoms `=4xx1=4` .
Charge on the central atom (I) = 1
`therefore` Total no. of electrons around central atom = 7+4+1 = 12
`therefore` Total no. of electron pairs around central atom `=12/2=6`
No. of bond pairs = 4 ( `because` there are four I- Cl bonds)
`therefore` Number of lone pairs =6 -4 = 2.
Thus I in `ICI_(4)^(-)` has 4 bond pairs and 2 lone pairs. According to VSEPR theory, `ICI_(4)^(-)` should have a square planar geometry.
`XeF_(4)` is a noble gas compound having `12(8+1xx 4=12)` electrons in the valence shell of the central atom. It has 4 bond pairs and 2 lone pairs like `ICI_(4)^(-)`. Hence,`XeF_(4)` also has a square planar geometry.
