Why is atomisation enthalpy of zinc lowe...

Why is atomisation enthalpy of zinc lowest `(126kJ.mol^(-1))` among the metals of 3d-series ?

Text Solution

Zn belongs to 3rd group of periodic table. The extent of metallic bonding within an element dictates the enthalpy of atomisation. The more extensive the metallic bonding within an element, the more extensive the metallic bonding within an element, the more is its enthalpy of atomisation. In all transition metals (except Zn, electronic configuration : `3d^(10)4s^(2)`), they have some unpaired electrons that account for their stronger metallic bonding. Due to absence of these unpaired electrons, the inter-atomic bonding is the weakest in case of Zn and as a result, it has the least value of enthalpy of atomisation.
