Which of the following ions will be coloured in aqueous solution ? `Ti^(3+), V^(3+), MnO_(4)^(-), Sc^(3+), Mn^(2+), Fe^(3+), Co^(2+)`.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

3d metal ions having incompletely filled d-subshell can undergo d-d transition resulting in the formation of coloured complex. Therefore `Ti^(3+)(d^(1)), V^(3+)(d^(2)), Fe^(3+)(d^(5)), Co^(2+)(d^(7))`, will form coloured complex in aqueous solution. `MnO_(4)^(-)(d^(0))`, though do not have any d-electron form coloured complex due to partial charge transfer from oxide to Mn.
