Paramagnetic character of transition ele...

Paramagnetic character of transition elements of 3d series increases upto Mn and then decreases with increase in atomic number. Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Along 3d-transition series, from `._(21)Sc` to `._(25)Mn` number of unpaired electron increases as each additional electron occupies one vacant d-orbital. But after Mn the additional electron goes to the same orbital already having one electron goes to the same orbital already having one electron i.e., pairing takes place. Therefore number of unpaired electron decreases along the period with increasing atomic number after Mn and this is the reason why paramagnetic character decreases going from Mn to Zn.
