Which of the following cations are colou...

Which of the following cations are coloured in aqueous solution and why ? `Ti^(4+), Co^(2+), Ag^(+)`.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

3d metal ions having incompletely filled d-subshell can undergo d-d transition resulting in the formation of coloured complex. Among the given ions only `Co^(2+)` has incompletely filled d-subshell `(d^(7))[Ti^(4+)(d^(0))` has no electron in d-orbital whereas in `Ag^(+)` the d-orbital is completely filled `(d^(10))]` and hence it can only form coloured complex in aqueous solution.
