Why do transition elements show variable oxidation states ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The difference between the energy of (n - 1)d and ns orbital is comparatively low for the transition elements. Therefore electrons from both (n - 1)d and ns-orbital can participate in the bonding. Moreover various number of d-electrons participate in various reactions which leads to variable valency of the transition elements.
