Why does zinc show only + 2 oxidation state ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

By losing two electrons `Zn^(2+)` forms a fulfilled stable `d^(10)` electronic configuration. Further removal of electron from this filled d-orbital requires very high energy. Therefore it only shows + 2 oxidation state.
