Out of `[Sc(H_(2)O)_(6)]^(3+)` and `[Ti(H_(2)I)_(6)]^(3+)` ions which one is coloured and why ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`[Sc(H_(2)O)]^(3+)` has no electron in d-orbital whereas `[Ti(H_(2)O)]^(3+)` has one electron in outermost 3d orbital. Hence `Ti^(3+)` can undergo d-d transition whereas in `Sc^(3+)` such transition cannot occur. Thus only `[Ti(H_(2)O)_(6)]^(3+)` is coloured in nature.
