Dilute H(2)SO(4) is used instead of dilu...

Dilute `H_(2)SO_(4)` is used instead of dilute HCl in the quantitative analysis of `Fe^(2+)` ion by `KMnO_(4)` in acis medium. Why ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

During the quantitative analysis of `Fe^(2+)` by `MnO_(4)^(-), Fe^(2+)` is oxidised to `Fe^(3+)` quantitatively. In presence of `HCl, MnO_(4)^(-)` oxidies HCl to `Cl_(2)` and therefore we can get an erroneous result.
