`Cu([Ar]3d^(10)4s^(1))` atom has completely filled 3d-subshell. However, in its + 2 oxidation state (stable state), the `Cu^(2+)` ions has incompletely filled 3d-oritals `(Cu^(2+):[Ar]3d^(9)4s^(0))`. Hence, copper is considered to be a transition element.
