Atomic radii of the transition elements ...

Atomic radii of the transition elements do not decrease significantly, with increase in atomic no. Give reason.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

On going from left to right with increase in atomic number of transition elements, the differentiating electron enters the (n - 1)d-subshell. Due to increasing screening effect of greater number of d-electrons, the effective nuclear charge does not increase substantially. Hence, there is no significant decrease in the atomic radii.
