Verified by Experts

Disproportion reaction is a specific type of redox reaction in which the same substance is oxidised and reduced simultaneously to from two different products.
Examples : (1) Disproportionation of `Cu^(+)` in aqueous solution forms Cu and `Cu^(2+) : 2Cu^(+)rarr Cu+Cu^(2+)`
(2) Disproportionation of manganate ion is acidic medium gives permanganate ion and manganese dioxide.
`3overset(VI)(Mn)O_(4)^(2-)+4H^(+)to 2overset(VII)(Mn)O_(4)^(-)+overset(IV)(Mn)O_(2)+2H_(2)O`
