Why is `TiCl_(2)` paramagnetic but `TiO_(2)` is diamagnetic ? (atomic number of Ti is 22).

In `TiCl_(2)`, oxidation number of Ti is + 2. Hence there are 2 unpaired electrons present in the outer orbital `(3d^(2)4s^(0))` of `Ti^(2+)`. Thus `TiCl_(2)` exhibits paramagnetic behaviour. In `TiO_(2)`, due to the + 4 oxidation state of Ti, the valence d-orbital does not contain any unpaired electron `(3d^(0))`. Therefore it shows diamagnetic property.
