How would you account for the following ?
Lanthanoids form primarily + 3 ions, while the actinoids usually have higher oxidation states in their compounds, + 4 or even + 6 being typical.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Lanthnoids show limited number of oxidation states (+2, +3 and +4 of which + 3 in the most common). This is because 4f - orbitals in lanthanoids are buried deep inside the atom, totally shielded by outer orbitals and thus unable to take part in bonding. On the otherhand, actionoids show a large number of oxidation states, including the higher ones, because 5f - orbitals extend in space beyond 6s and 6p - orbitals and thus participates favourably in bonding.
