On heating copper turnings with conc. H(...

On heating copper turnings with conc. `H_(2)SO_(4)`, a colourless gas with pungent smell is evolved which decolourises acidified `KMnO_(4)` solution. Identify the gas.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The evolved gas is sulphur dioxide `(SO_(2))`. It reduces `KMnO_(4)` to `Mn^(2+)`, thereby decolourising the solution. `2KMnO_(4)+5SO_(2)+2H_(2)O rarr K_(2)SO_(4)+2MnSO_(4)+2H_(2)SO_(4)`
