Compare the chemistry of actinoids with that of the lanthanoids with special reference to :
Atomic and ionic sizes

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Atomic and ionic sizes : Both lanthanoids and actinoids show decrease in size of their atoms and `M^(3+)` ions with increasing atomic number. Decrease in atomic radii (often called lanthanoid contraction and actinoid contraction, respectively) is not regular. However, decrease in ionic radii (for `M^(3+)` ion) is more regular. The contraction is greater in actinoids resulting from poor shielding by 5f - electrons than that by 4f - electrons in lanthanoids.

Magnetic moments of actinoids are less than that of lanthanoids. Why ?

Chemistry of actinoids is complicated as compared to lanthanoids. Give two reasons.

The chemistry of the actinoid elements is not so smooth as that of the lanthanoids. Justify this statement by giving some examples from the oxidation state of these elements.

Discuss the characteristic properties of the transition elements with special reference to : (i) enthalpy of atomisation, (ii) variable oxidation state, (iii) formation of complex compounds, (iv) formation of coloured ions.
