Although Zr belongs to 4d and Hf belongs to 5d transition series but it is quite difficult to separate them. Why ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Due to lanthanide contraction Zr (4d - element of group 4) and Hf (5d - element of group 4) have almost the same size (160 pm and 159 pm, respectively). So in the same oxidation state they have the same charge to radius ratio and hence, similar physical and chemical properties.
