Explain why does the colour of `KMnO_(4)` disappear when oxalic acid is added to its solution in acidic medium.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`KMnO_(4)` oxidises oxalic acid to `CO_(2)` and it itself get reduced to form `Mn^(2+)` ion (colourless). `2MnO_(4)^(-)+5C_(2)O_(4)^(-)+16H^(+)rarr 2Mn^(2+)+10CO_(2)uarr + 8H_(2)O`
