E^(0) of Cu is +0.34 V while that of Zn ...

`E^(0)` of Cu is `+0.34 V` while that of Zn is -0.76V. Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Positive `E^(0)` value for Cu arises from the fact that sum of sublimation enthalpy and ionisation enthalpy for the conversion of Cu(s) to `Cu^(2+)` is so high, that it is not compensated by hydration enthalpy of `Cu^(2+)` ion. Negative `E^(0)` value for Zn arises form the fact that after removal of 2 electrons form 4s - orbital, stable `3d^(10)` configuration is attained.
