Answer the following questions :
Identify the metal and justify your answer :
(i) Carbonyl `M(CO)_(5)` (ii) `MO_(3)F`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(i) In complexes of first transition metal ions, the effective atomic number (EAN) of the central metal atom will be 36. Now in `M(CO)_(5)`, five ligands (i.e., CO) account for 10 electrons. Thus the metal atom will have a total of `36-10=26` electrons. So the metal M is iron (Fe), and the carbonyl compound is `Fe(CO)_(5)`. (ii) In `MO_(3)F` , let the oxidation state of M be x. Therefore `x+3xx(-2)+(-1)=0`, or `x=+7`. So M must be Mn, because manganese shows an oxidation state of + 7. Thus the compound is `MnO_(3)F`.
