Actinoids exhibit more oxidation states ...

Actinoids exhibit more oxidation states than lanthanoids. Why ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In case of lanthanides, the 4f - orbitals are directed towards the core of the atoms. On the contrary, the 5f - orbitals of the actinides are directed towards the periphery of the atoms. Hence, the 5 f - electrons can easily form bonds as compared to 4f - electrons. Moreover, there is little difference in energy between 5f, 6d and 7s - orbitals and so these orbitals can take part in bonding
