Determine the coordination number of Ni ...

Determine the coordination number of Ni and Co in the complexes `[Ni(CO)_(4)]` and `[Co(NH_(3))_(6)]^(3+)`.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In `[Ni(CO)_(4)],` four `CO` molecules are bonded to `Ni` through coordinate bonding. Thus coordination number of `Ni` is 4. On the other hand, in `[Co(NH_(3))_(6)],` six `NH_(3)` molecules are bonded to `Co` through coordinate bonding. Thus coordination number of `Co` in `[Co(NH_(3))_(6)]` is 6.
