Out of the two isomeric alkyl bromides, the `alpha`-carbon of `1^(@)` -halide is less hindered and more positively polarised. Since, electron donating +I effect of one ethyl and one methyl group is greater than that of a single n-butyl group, 1-bromobutane will react more rapidly by `S_(N)2` mechanism.
