Predict all the alkenes that would be formed by dehydrohalogenation of the following halides with sodium ethoxide in ethanol and identify the major alkene:
(iii) 2,2,3-trimethyl-3-bromopentane.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The substrate contains two different types of `beta`-hydrogens and hence, in principle, two different alkenes (I and II) are produced. However, the more substituted alkene I (i.e., Saytzeff product) is formed as the major product.
