Explain why-
(ii) Alkyl halides, though polar, are immiscible with water.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Alkyl halides are polar compounds and their molecules are held together by relatively weaker attractive forces involving dipole-dipole interaction. On the other hand, molecules of water `(H_(2)O)` are held together by very strong attractive force involving intermolecular H-bonding. Since molecules of alkyl halides cannot form H-bonds with `H_(2)O` molecules, alkyl halides are immiscible in water.
