Equal volumes of two gases `A` and `B` diffuse through a porous pot in 20 and 10 seconds respectively if the molar mass of `A` be 80 find the molar mass of `B` .

Text Solution

Rate of diffusion of gas `A (r_(A)) = V/20`
Rate of diffusion of gas `B (r_(B)) = V/10`
Molar mass of gas A = 80
Molar mass of gas `B = ?`
According to Graham's Law diffusion
`(r_(A))/(r_(B)) = sqrt((M_(B))/(M_(H_(2)))) , (V//20)/(V//10) = sqrt((80)/(M_(H_(2))))`
Squaring both sides, `(20 xx 20)/(10 xx 10) = (80)/(M_(H_(2))` or `M_(H_(2)) = (80 xx 10 xx 10)/(20 xx 20) = 20`
