Why does the conductivity of silicon increase upon doping with phosphorus ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

One doping silicon (a group 14 element with 4 valence shell electrons ) with phosphorus (a group 15 element with 5 valence shell electrons), the electric conductivity increases by the presence of excess of negatively charged electrons. This type of doping results in n-type semiconductors since the electrical conductivity is due to exessive electrons.
