What is the formula of a coumound in which the element Y forms ccp lattice and atoms X occupy 1/3rd of tetrahedral voids ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
`X_(2)Y_(3)`

Let the number of atoms of Y in ccp lattice = n
Number of tetrahedral voids = 2n
Since only 1/3 of tetrahedral voids are occupied by the atoms of the elements X
Number of atoms of X in ccp lattice = `2nxx1//3=2n//3.`
Ratio of X:Y is 2n/3 : n = 2 : 3
Formula of the compound = `X_(2)Y_(3)`.
