When liquid 'A' is treated with a freshly prepared ammoniacal silver nitrate solution it gives bright silver mirror. The liquid forms a white crystalline solid on treatment with sodium hydrogen sulphate. Liquid 'B' also forms a white crystalline solid with sodium hydrogen sulphate. but it does not give test with ammoniacal silver nitrate. Which of the two liquids is aldehyde? Write the chemical equations of these reactions also.

Text Solution

The available information clearly suggests that the liquid 'A' is an aldehyde while the liquid 'B' is a ketone. Both aldehydes and ketones form white crystalline solids on reaction with sodium hydrogen sulphate `(NaHSO_(3))`. However, only aldehydes respond to reaction with Tollen's reagent (ammoniacal silver solution). For chemical reations, consult section 8.
