The carbon-oxygen bond in phenol is slig...

The carbon-oxygen bond in phenol is slightly stronger than that in methanol. Why ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In phenol `C-OH` bond is involved in conjugation with the `pi`-electron pairs in the ring. It acquires a partial double bond character. However, no such conjugation is possible in `CH_(3)-OH`. Therefore, `C-OH` bond length is comparactively more. For the resonating/conjugation in phenol, consult section 16.
