When a sample of gas is compressed at contant temperature from 15 atm to 60 atm, its volume changes from `76 cm^(3) " to " 20.5 cm^(3)`. Which of the following statements are possible explanation of this behaviour ?
(1) The gas behaves non-ideally
(2) The gas dimerises
(3) The gas is adsorbed into the vessel walls

A

1, 2 and 3

B

1 and 2 only

C

2 and 3 only

D

1 only

The correct Answer is:
D

For an ideal gas undergoing no adsorption, dimerisation etc., `P_(1)V_(1) = P_(2)V_(2)`
`15 atm xx 76 cm^(3) = 60 atm xx V_(2)`
`V_(2) = (15 xx 76)/(60) cm^(3)`
`= 19 cm^(3) lt 20.5 cm^(3)`
As observed volume is more, therefore, no adsorption or dimerisation has taken place as these would have decreased the observed volume. As such, in this case, the gas has benaved non-ideally
