56 g of nitrogen and 96 g of oxygen are ...

56 g of nitrogen and 96 g of oxygen are mixed isothermaly and at a total pressure of 10 atm. The partial pressures of oxygen and nitrogen (in atm) are respectively :

A

4, 6

B

5, 5

C

2, 8

D

`6, 4`

The correct Answer is:
D

According to Dalton's law of partial pressure, Partial pressure of a component = Mole fraction `xx` total pressure
Given mass of `N_(2) = 50 g`
Mass of `O_(2) = 96 g`
Total pressure = 10 atm
`n_(N_(2)) = (50)/(25) = 2, n_(O_(2)) = (96)/(32) =3`
`x_(N_(2)) = (2) /(2 + 3) = 0.4 , x_(O_(2)) = 1 - 0.4 = 0.6`
`:. pN_(2) = 0.4 xx 10 10 = 4 atm`
`pO_(2) = 0.6 xx 10 = 6 atm`
