For the metallurgical process of which of the ores calcined ore can be reduced by carbon?

A

Haematite

B

Calamine

C

Iron pyrites

D

Sphalerite

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
A, B

(a,b) In the metallurgical process, the oxides ores are reduced by carbon. Sulphide ore cannot be reduced by carbon. Here, haematite `(Fe_(2)O_(3))` and calamine `(ZnO)` are oxide ores of iron and zinc respectively while iron pyrites `(FeS_(2))` and sphalerite `(ZnS)` are sulphide ores of iron and zinc respectively.
Therefore, haematite and calamine can be reduced by reduced by carbon
