Explain why an organic liquld vaporizes at a temperature below its bolling point in Its steam distillation.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In steam distillation the liquid boils when the sum of vapour pressures due to organic liquid `(p_(1))`and that due to water `(p_(2))` becomes equal to the atmospheric pressure (p) i.e., `p=P_(1) + P_(2)`. Since `p_(1)` is lower than p the organic liquid vapourise at lower temperature than its boiling point.
