Explain the process of respiration in earthworm.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In earthworm, specialized respiratory organs are absent. The gaseous exchange takes place through general body surface. The body surface shows following adaptations for gaseous exchange to occur : (i) It is kept moist by epidermal cells and coelomic fluid. (ii) It is thin and richly supplied with blood. Gaseous exchange, i.e., intake of oxygen and giving out of CO2 take place between blood capillaries of outer epidermis and surface film of moisture. The oxygen diffuses into the blood and combines with haemoglobin to form oxyhaemoglobin, which is carried to different tissues.
