In a nuclear reactor, moderators slow down the neutrons which come out in a fission process. The moderator used have light nuclei. Heavy nuclei will not serve the purpose because

A

they will break up

B

elastic collision of neutrons with heavy nuclei will not slow them down

C

the net weight of the reactor would be unbearably high

D

substances with heavy nuclei do not occur in liquid or gaseous state at room teperature

The correct Answer is:
b

According to the question the moderator used have light nuclei (like proton). When protons undergo perfectly elastic collision with the neutron emitted their velocities are exchanged i.e., neutrons come to rest and protons move with the velocity of neutrons.
Heavy nuclei will not serve the purpose because elastic collisions of neutrons with heavy nuclei will not slow them down.

Calcium rods are used in nuclear reactors to slow down the neutrons taking part in the fission process

Substance used to slow down the fast neutrons released during nuclear fission is called?

(a) What are thermal neutrons in the context of nuclear fission ? (b) What role does a moderator play in a nuclear reactor ?

Moderator is used in a nuclear to slow down fast neutrons generated after a fission event in the reactor consider a fast neutron (mass m_(n) ) moving at speed v. The neutron hits a moderator nucleus (Mass M), which is originally static, and gets scattered elastically by 180^(@) (a) Find te rato of kinetic energy of the neutron after and before collision. (b) Show that when Mgtgtm_(n) , neutron does not lose much energy and therefore, a moderator should have a small mass number.
