Why do we store silver chloride in dark coloured bottles?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Dark coloured bottles interrupt the path of light such that light cannot reach silver chloride in the bottle and its decomposition is prevented. It is known that silver chloride decomposes to silver and chlorine in the presence of light.
This is shown in the reaction given below
`underset(underset(underset("(white)")("chloride"))("Silver"))(2AgCl(s))overset("Sun light")to underset(underset("(grey)")("Silver"))(2Ag(s))+underset("Chlorine")(Cl_(2)(g))`
Hence, it is stored in dark coloured bottles.
