All the living organisms need energy for their survival and growth. This energy is obtained from various life processes such as nutrition and respiration. Thus, these phenomenon are essential for the living of an individual.
Compared to these life processes, reproduction may appear to be a waste of energy as it is not essential for survival of an indidual. But it is an Important function of a living being as it helps in production of new indiduals of its own kind. Continuity of life has been possible through reproduction.
Genetic material is transferred from one generation to the next by DNA copying as a result of reproduction. DNA copying takes place with high constancy and considerable variations. This is advantageous for maintaining features that allow the organism to survive in the changing environment. therefore, reproduction is related to the stability of a species and is not essential for the survival of an individual.
