Derive the expression for the electric ...

Derive the expression for the electric potential at any point along the axial line of an electric dipole.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Deivation of expression of electric field on the equatoral line of the dipole.

Both are equal and their direction are as shwon in the figure. Hence net electric field
`E_(+q)=q/(4piepsilon_(0)(r^(2)+a^(2)))`
`E_(-q)=q/(4piepsilon_(0)(r^(2)+a^(2)))`
Let the point P be the at a distance r form the mid point of the dipole.
`vec(E)=[-(E_(+q)+E_(-q)cosq]hatp`
`=-(2qa)/(4piepsilon_(0)(r^(2)+a^(2))^(3//2))hatp`
