A salt X is formed and a gas is evolved ...

A salt X is formed and a gas is evolved when ethanoic acid reacts with sodium hydrogen carbonate. Name the salt X and the gas evolved. Describe an activity and draw the diagram of the apparatus to prove that the evolved gas is the one which you have named. Also, write the chemical equation of the reaction involved.

When ethanoic acid reacts with sodium hydrogen carbonate, sodium ethanoate is formed.
Thus, X is sodium ethanoate and the gas evolved gas evolved is carbon dioxide `(CO_(2))`.
`underset("acid")underset("Ethanoic")(CH_(3)CO)OH+underset("carbonate")underset("hydrogen")underset("Sodium")(NaHCO_(3))tounderset('X')underset("Sodium ethanoate")(CH_(3)COONa)+H_(2)O+underset("Gas")underset("Carbon dioxide")(CO_(2)uarr)`
Activity (i) Set up the apparatus as shown.

(ii) Take `NaHCO_(3)` in a test tube and add 2 mL ethanoic acid.
(ii) `CO_(2)` gas is evolved with brisk effervescence.
(iv) Pass the gas through freshly prepared lime water. It wil turn milk due to the formation of insoluble calcium carbonate.
`underset("Lime water")(Ca(OH)_(2))+underset("dioxide")underset("Carbon")(CO_(2))tounderset(("milkiness"))underset("carbonate")underset("Calcium")(CaCO_(3))+H_(2)O`
