If 'R' is the distance of the Moon from ...

If 'R' is the distance of the Moon from the Earth and 'T ' is the period of revolution of the Moon , then obtain the formula to calculate the mass of the Earth.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Assuming that the path of the moon to be circular,
the period `T=(4pi^(2)R^(3))/(GM_(E)) " i.e., "M_(E)=(4pi^(2)R^(3))/(GT^(2))`
Hence ' M ' of the Earth can be determined by measuring the distance of the Moon and period of revolution of the Moon.
